Fellowships at Toronto Radiology/St. Michael’s Hospital

Why Train at St. Michael’s Hospital – Abdominal Imaging Fellowship

As part of the University of Toronto fellowship network, recognized worldwide for excellence in clinical medicine, SMH offers fellows both the prestige of U of T and the distinctive strengths of our own site. SMH training equips fellows to be versatile, polished, and ready for both academic and community practice — serving subspecialists as well as general practitioners with confidence.

Close Mentorship & Role Modeling

With a smaller number of staff at a single site, fellows develop deeper relationships with faculty. This continuity allows you to truly observe, learn from, and model staff strengths and reporting styles.

Diagnostic-First Training

Unlike programs where many patients are already diagnosed and followed, at SMH fellows interpret a high proportion of fresh, not-yet-diagnosed cases. This develops strong reasoning skills for working up unknown findings from scratch.

Emphasis on Report Quality

SMH emphasizes clear, polished reporting. Fellows are expected to refine their reports, ensuring they graduate with communication skills that match their diagnostic skills — ready for both academic and community practice.

Breadth of Clinical Exposure

Located in the heart of downtown Toronto, SMH serves a remarkably diverse population — oncology patients, transplant recipients, trauma patients, younger healthy patients (including university students), inner-city communities, and newly arrived immigrants and refugees. This spectrum is complemented by a balance of subspecialty and GP referrals, and by extensive trauma imaging as a Level 1 trauma center. Fellows also gain unique exposure to pelvic floor imaging (MR defecography), a distinctive expertise available only at SMH. Fellows graduate with confidence managing patients across a wide range of contexts.

Supportive Environment & Career Success

Fellows are treated as future colleagues. Many of our strongest fellows have stayed on as staff radiologists at SMH. Others have secured positions at other leading University of Toronto academic hospitals, as well as many other Canadian and international academic centers, or have thrived in respected community practices.
This balance proves SMH training prepares you for success across all career paths.
