Our Subspecialties

The University of Toronto faculty doctors at St. Michael’s Hospital specialize in 7 subspecialties of radiology.

We specialize in diagnostic imaging, diagnostic procedures, and image-guided therapies for disorders of the brain, head, neck, and spine. In particular, our expertise lies in diagnosing and evaluating multiple sclerosis, neuroinflammatory disorders, neurovascular diseases, brain tumours, and brain and spine trauma. Our neuroradiologists are part of the University of Toronto Division of Neuroimaging.

Specializing in diagnostic imaging and image-guided procedures for abdominal and pelvic organ disorders, we utilize ultrasound, CT, MRI, and plain film radiography. Our expertise extends to obstetrical and gynecologic ultrasound and MRI. Our abdominal radiologists are part of the University of Toronto Division of Abdominal Imaging.

Vascular & Interventional Radiology (VIR) is a specialty that performs minimally invasive treatments and medical procedures using radiological (imaging) guidance. VIR treatments have become the primary method of care for a variety of conditions, offering less risk, less pain, and less recovery time, compared to open surgery. Our VIR radiologists are part of the University of Toronto Division of Vascular/Interventional Radiology.

We specialize in diagnostic imaging and image-guided procedures for disorders of the bones, joints, muscles and soft tissues, using ultrasound, CT, MRI, and plain film radiography. This also includes a significant focus on imaging of sports injuries. Our musculoskeletal radiologists are part of the University of Toronto Division of Musculoskeletal Imaging.

Our Molecular Imaging Division specializes in a broad range of nuclear medicine procedures with an emphasis on nuclear cardiac imaging, endocrine metabolic imaging, kidney functional imaging, and rheumatologic imaging including bone scans and Bone Mineral Densitometry (BMD). The clinical and academic work in the division fosters multidisciplinary dialogue and strong clinical collaboration in these areas. A cardiac PET/CT program will become the flagship of this subspecialty, and is currently in development.

Specializing in chest imaging and intervention, our focus lies significantly on the heart and lungs. Our expertise extends to CT scans for early lung cancer detection and planning for various minimally invasive heart valve treatments offered at St. Michael’s. Proficiency in MRI allows us to diagnose and monitor heart muscle and aortic diseases, along with their treatments. Our cardiothoracic radiologists are part of the University of Toronto Division of Cardiothoracic Imaging.

We are an OBSP screening (including high-risk screening) accredited breast imaging site specializing in diagnostic imaging and image-guided procedures for disorders of the breasts. With a heavy emphasis on breast cancer, through the performance of mammograms, breast ultrasound, breast MRI, and numerous breast interventional procedures. Our breast imaging radiologists are part of the University of Toronto Division of Breast Imaging.

Specializing in diagnosing acutely ill and injured patients, our focus is on Emergency Department and Trauma cases, with 24-hour availability. Our accredited Level 1 trauma hospital exclusively receives overnight diagnostic radiology reports from radiologists with fellowship training in Emergency Radiology. Our Emergency and Trauma Radiology radiologists are part of the University of Toronto Division of Emergency Radiology Medical Imaging in Toronto.
