We are thrilled to announce the winners of the 2025 St. Michael’s Hospital Department of Medical Imaging physician awards. These prestigious awards, determined by the votes of peers and colleagues, honour exceptional contributions in the fields of research and teaching. This year’s recipients, Dr. Amy Chen and Dr. Guan Huang, have demonstrated remarkable dedication and innovation in their respective areas.
Professor Ronald W. McCallum Award for Excellence in the Promotion of Quality, Innovation, and Research in Medical Imaging
Dr. Amy Chen
Dr. Chen published several papers in AI and neuroradiology, including a high profile study on machine learning models that can be used to detect missed cervical spine fractures and moreover potentially be used as an innovative educational tool for radiologists. This yielded an oral presentation at RSNA and a recent journal article in AJR which attracted 2 editorial comments, an AJR study guide, and an AJR trainee podcast. Her innovative approach to teaching Case of the Week in Neuroradiology to fellows is now a regular part of this website. Finally, she was our practice’s radiologist lead to engage with the electronic patient record team at Unity Health to deliver a functional and stable Epic radiology platform to St. Michael’s Hospital.
Professor William J. Weiser Award for Excellence in Teaching of Medical Imaging Residents and Fellows
Dr. Guan Huang
Dr. Huang has been recognized numerous times at the University of Toronto with Outstanding Teacher awards for both residents and fellows, and she won this departmental award previously in both 2020 and 2021, becoming only the second radiologist at Toronto Radiology to have won this award at least 3 times. She is the St. Michael’s Hospital Abdominal Imaging Fellowship Supervisor, has served as our Residency Site Lead and will soon join an ACR Appropriateness Panel for Ob/Gyn Imaging.
A Tradition of Excellence
Over the years, many distinguished professionals from Toronto Radiology and St. Michael’s Hospital have been honoured with Professor Ronald W. McCallum and Professor William J. Weiser Awards. Past recipients of the McCallum Award include Dr. Anish Kirpalani, a four-time winner recognized for his contributions in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2021; Dr. Bruce Gray (2016); Dr. Aditya Bharatha (2017); Dr. Amy Lin (2018); Dr. Noah Ditkofsky (2021); Dr. Derek Muradali (2023); and Dr. Amy Chen (2024). The Weiser Award has similarly highlighted exceptional educators such as Dr. Walter Mak, who was honoured four times in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2021; Dr. Errol Colak, who was honoured three times (2019, 2022 and 2024); Dr. Gevork Mnatzakanian, who was honoured twice (2018, 2021); Dr. Matthew Wu, who was honoured twice (2022, 2023); Dr. Guan Huang, who was honoured twice (2020, 2021); Dr. Dipanka Sarma (2014); Dr. Djeven Deva (2015); and Dr. Lyne Noel De Tilly (2019).
