Toronto Radiology at St. Michael’s Hospital completed its first clinical Amyloid PET scan on April 17, 2026—marking the launch of a newly funded Amyloid PET program to support earlier and more accurate diagnosis of Alzheimer’s disease.

The first patient scanned was a 67-year-old woman living with dementia. The Ontario Health–funded program is intended for people with mild cognitive impairment (MCI) and early Alzheimer’s disease, especially in support of new drug therapies coming to market for MCI in Canada.

The program is expected to benefit patients across Unity Health Toronto and the surrounding community. Amyloid PET scans can help detect and measure amyloid plaques in the brain, supporting clinicians in psychiatry, geriatrics, and neurology as they assess cognitive impairment and investigate Alzheimer’s disease. Toronto Radiology and the Nuclear Medicine team at St. Michael’s Hospital prepared for more than two years to bring clinical PET scanning to patients, and Ontario Health’s new funding has now made this service available.
