We are thrilled to announce the winners of the 2024 St. Michael’s Hospital Department of Medical Imaging physician awards. These prestigious awards, determined by the votes of peers and colleagues, honour exceptional contributions in the fields of research and teaching. This year’s recipients, Dr. Errol Colak and Dr. Amy Chen have demonstrated remarkable dedication and innovation in their respective areas.

Professor Ronald W. McCallum Award for Excellence in the Promotion of Quality, Innovation, and Research in Medical Imaging

Dr. Errol Colak

Dr. Colak has had an outstanding year, publishing over 10 papers in AI research and leading the introduction of two neuroimaging AI tools into clinical practice at St. Michael’s Hospital. He has also forged an important partnership with Bunkerhill Health, a consortium dedicated to developing and improving access to AI algorithms. This collaboration is expected to bring significant research funding to the department this year. This is Dr. Colak’s third time winning this award (2019, 2022)

Professor William J. Weiser Award for Excellence in Teaching of Medical Imaging Residents and Fellows

Dr. Chen’s commitment to education is truly inspiring. Recently, she participated in the ARRS – Clinician Educator Development Program (CEDP) and was selected as an Outstanding Teacher in the residency program at the University of Toronto’s Medical Imaging Department. Her innovative weekly Neuroradiology case of the week emails have become extremely popular among current and past fellows, providing valuable learning opportunities and fostering a strong educational community. This is Dr. Chen’s first time winning this award.

A Tradition of Excellence

Over the years, many distinguished professionals from Toronto Radiology and St. Michael’s Hospital have been honoured with Professor Ronald W. McCallum and Professor William J. Weiser Awards. Past recipients of the McCallum Award include Dr. Anish Kirpalani, a four-time winner recognized for his contributions in 2013, 2014, 2015, and 2021; Dr. Bruce Gray (2016); Dr. Aditya Bharatha (2017); Dr. Amy Lin (2018); Dr. Noah Ditkofsky (2021); and Dr. Derek Muradali (2023). The Weiser Award has similarly highlighted exceptional educators such as Dr. Walter Mak, who was honoured four times in 2013, 2016, 2017 and 2021; Dr. Gevork Mnatzakanian, who was honoured twice (2018, 2021); Dr. Matthew Wu, who was honoured twice (2022, 2023); Dr. Dipanka Sarma (2014); Dr. Djeven Deva (2015); Dr. Lyne Noel De Tilly (2019); and Dr. Guan Huang (2021).
