After more than two decades at the forefront of neurointerventional radiology at St. Michael’s Hospital, Dr. Tom Marotta has announced that he will be stepping back from his interventional practice, while continuing his work in diagnostic neuroradiology and his many academic and institutional contributions.

Dr. Marotta trained as an intern, a neurosurgical resident and radiology resident at St. Michael’s Hospital before pursuing further training and practice in Canada and the United States. After establishing a neurointerventional service at Vancouver General Hospital, he returned to St. Michael’s Hospital in 2001 to support a similar program here with the late Dr. Walter Montanera. Together, they became trailblazers in the treatment of neurovascular conditions such as acute strokes and ruptured brain aneurysms. These two pillars built the program from the ground up, forging a partnership that treated no challenge as too great and no vision as out of reach. Today this program sees patients from across Toronto, throughout Ontario and beyond.

Beyond clinical care, Dr. Marotta has been a leader in research and device innovation. His patented invention for treating brain aneurysms has been used in Canada and internationally, reflecting his commitment to advancing safer, less invasive treatment options.

Even as he steps back from interventional duties, Dr. Marotta will continue to support several key areas as well as his ongoing work in diagnostic neuroradiology, where his expertise will remain invaluable.

Toronto Radiology at St. Michael’s Hospital celebrates Dr. Marotta’s extraordinary contributions to neurointerventional radiology and looks forward to his continued leadership, mentorship, and diagnostic expertise in the years ahead.
